A little word workout

Press play. Give it a go.

Aha! Or… try again.

Once upon a language…

Little treats for curious brains

A LITTLE SPANISH. A LITTLE SUNSHINE.
An orange to buy? A coffee to order? Already two excellent reasons to try a little Spanish.
Try a few words. Make a funny mistake. We’ll explain what happened in plain language, then you can have another go.

A TEN-SECOND ADVENTURE
Which word would you use to say hello in Spanish?
Pick a word. The creature is rooting for you.
Hola = hello · gracias = thank you · adiós = goodbye.

THE WORD-PUZZLE WORKSHOP
Spanish words have a stressed syllable: one part gets a stronger beat. Accent marks often show where it goes. Unlike English, Spanish spelling usually gives you reliable clues to pronunciation.
café → ca-FÉ
hola → HO-la
Try saying it aloud. Your eyebrows may join in.
In English, “white” stays the same in “a white house” and “a white book”. In Spanish, describing words often change to match the noun. Start with an example and notice the endings.
una casa blanca = a white house
un libro blanco = a white book
We’ll show the pattern first. The grammar name can come later.
In English, you usually say “I speak”. In Spanish, the ending of the verb can tell you who is speaking, so you can often leave out “yo” (I).
Hablo. = I speak.
Yo hablo. = I speak.
Small word. Quite a lot of information tucked inside.
English uses “don’t” in “I don’t understand”. Spanish puts “no” before the verb. Learn the little sentence, then try changing the verb.
No entiendo. = I don’t understand.
No trabajo. = I don’t work.
A perfectly good sentence for asking for a less puzzling explanation.
A short video will introduce Spanish and a few useful comparisons. Until it is ready, the blue crew and the explanations above will get you started. Captions and a transcript will come with the recording.
